Access Financial Assistance When You Need Financial Support Most

Job loss, high rent, medical bills, or reduced income can make it hard to cover housing, food, utilities, and child care. Federal and state programs may help families stabilize their finances and meet basic needs.

Housing Assistance

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps eligible low-income families rent apartments, homes, or townhouses in the private market. Families usually pay part of the rent, while the voucher pays the remainder to the landlord.

Applications are handled by local Public Housing Authorities (PHAs). Eligibility depends on income, household size, citizenship or eligible immigration status, and rental history. Because demand is high, many PHAs have waiting lists, so apply early.

Other options include public housing, emergency rental assistance, homelessness prevention, supportive housing, and homeownership help. HUD’s rental assistance page can help families find local resources.

Food Assistance

SNAP helps low-income households buy groceries. Benefits are loaded onto an EBT card for use at approved stores. Eligibility depends on household size, income, expenses, and sometimes work requirements.

Apply through your state SNAP agency using the USDA SNAP state directory.

Children may also qualify for school meals, summer meals, child-care meals, and WIC. Learn more through USDA’s child nutrition programs page and the National School Lunch Program.

Utility Assistance

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible households pay heating and cooling bills, handle energy emergencies, and sometimes make homes more energy efficient. It is administered locally, and rules and funding vary by state.

Find your local program through the LIHEAP Clearinghouse. Some utility companies also offer payment plans, shutoff protection, and emergency hardship funds.

Cash and Child Care Support

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides temporary help to low-income families with children. States run their own programs, which may include cash assistance, child care, job training, transportation help, emergency aid, and housing-related support.

TANF is generally time-limited, and work or job-search requirements may apply. Contact your state human-services agency for local rules.

How to Apply?

Start with your most urgent need: food, rent, utilities, or child care, then contact the agency that manages that program in your state.

Before applying, gather:

  • Proof of income

  • Identification for household members

  • Proof of address

  • Rent or mortgage statements

  • Utility bills

  • Child care or medical expense records

  • Social Security numbers, where required

Use Benefits.gov to search for assistance programs based on your location and situation. Applying early, keeping documents organized, and contacting local agencies can improve your chances of receiving help.
